A little space for Health, Healing & Happiness!

As a child, I remember seeing a guy on TV in a blue jumpsuit talking about exercise and the benefits of a healthy diet. Today, I understand and appreciate much more what Jack LaLanne has done for North America and the entire world. Jack turned 96 on Sunday, September 26th! Here’s a couple of “firsts” he accomplished in his life:

  • Opened the first modern health spa
  • The first to have a nationally syndicated exercise show on television
  • The first to have athletes working out with weights
  • The first to have women working out with weights
  • The first to have the elderly working out with weights
  • The first to have a combination Health Food Bar and Gym
  • The first to have a weight loss Instant Breakfast meal replacement drink
  • The first to have a Coed health club
  • The first to combine weight training with nutrition
  • The first to have an edible snack nutrition bar
  • The first to sell vitamins and exercise equipment on television
  • The first to teach scientific body building by changing the program every 2 to 3 weeks
  • The first to encourage the physically challenged to exercise… to work around their disabilities
  • The first to do feats of strength and endurance to emphasize what exercise and nutrition can do for you
  • Developed the first:
  • Leg Extension Machine
  • Weight selector machine
  • Cable/Pulley machines
  • Calf machines
  • Wrist roll machines

Amazing!

Now, look what he has done for birthday challenges:

• 1954 (age 40): Jack swam the entire length of the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco, underwater, with 140 pounds (64 kg; 10 st) of equipment, including two air tanks. A world record.
• 1955 (age 41): Jack swam from Alcatraz Island to Fisherman’s Wharf in San Francisco while handcuffed. When interviewed afterwards he was quoted as saying that the worst thing about the ordeal was being handcuffed, which reduced his chance to Star Jump significantly.
• 1956 (age 42): Jack set a world record of 1,033 push-ups in 23 minutes on You Asked For It, a television program with Art Baker.
• 1957 (age 43): Jack swam the Golden Gate channel while towing a 2,500-pound (1,100 kg; 180 st) cabin cruiser. The swift ocean currents turned this one-mile (1.6 km) swim into a swimming distance of 6.5 miles (10.5 km).
• 1958 (age 44): Jack maneuvered a paddleboard nonstop from Farallon Islands to the San Francisco shore. The 30-mile (48 km) trip took 9.5 hours.
• 1959 (age 45): Jack did 1,000 star jumps and 1,000 chin-ups in 1 hour, 22 minutes and The Jack LaLanne Show went nationwide.
• 1974 (age 60): For the second time, Jack swam from Alcatraz Island to Fisherman’s Wharf. Again, he was handcuffed, but this time he was also shackled and towed a 1,000-pound (450 kg; 71 st) boat.
• 1975 (age 61): Repeating his performance of 21 years earlier, Jack again swam the entire length of the Golden Gate Bridge, underwater and handcuffed, but this time he was shackled and towed a 1,000-pound (450 kg; 71 st) boat.
• 1976 (age 62): To commemorate the “Spirit of ’76″, United States Bicentennial, Jack swam one mile (1.6 km) in Long Beach Harbor. He was handcuffed and shackled, and he towed 13 boats (representing the 13 original colonies) containing 76 people.
• 1979 (age 65): Jack towed 65 boats in Lake Ashinoko, near Tokyo, Japan. He was handcuffed and shackled, and the boats were filled with 6,500 pounds (2,900 kg; 460 st) of Louisiana Pacific wood pulp.[16]
• 1980 (age 66): Jack towed 10 boats in North Miami, Florida. The boats carried 77 people, and he towed them for over one mile (1.6 km) in less than one hour.
• 1984 (age 70): Once again handcuffed and shackled, Jack fought strong winds and currents as he swam 1.5 miles (2.4 km) while towing 70 boats with 70 people from the Queen’s Way Bridge in the Long Beach Harbor to the Queen Mary.

What did you do for your last birthday!?

Perception is everything right?  I like my grilled steaks with a touch of char, my mom sees any black on the steak and its burnt.  Some people are half-full, some are half-empty.  How you view things currently or in the past, has a great effect on who you are right now and what the universe will provide you.  The really cool thing is, you have an opportunity to change your perception of what is currently happening or have already happened!  There is perfection in everything – regardless of how you view it now, there is a reason for it and if you can see the beauty and gift in it, you will grow and evolve into a more complete being.

Bonus:  Ever watched or heard of one of the greatest horror films ever – “The Shining”?  Well, here is a re-edited version that takes a horror film and turns it into the feel good film of the summer.  Just an example of changing the images you see in your head!

Timothy Leary –

“‘Turn on’ meant go within to activate your neural and genetic equipment. Become sensitive to the many and various levels of consciousness and the specific triggers that engage them. Drugs were one way to accomplish this end. ‘Tune in’ meant interact harmoniously with the world around you – externalize, materialize, express your new internal perspectives. ‘Drop out’ suggested an elective, selective, graceful process of detachment from involuntary or unconscious commitments. ‘Drop Out’ meant self-reliance, a discovery of one’s singularity, a commitment to mobility, choice, and change. Unhappily my explanations of this sequence of personal development were often misinterpreted to mean ‘Get stoned and abandon all constructive activity’.” – Timothy Leary (yeah, THAT guy!)

Sounds like he was talking about getting adjusted!

Let it Rain!

Early Saturday morning, a woman about to get adjusted, said, “I can’t believe I’m saying this, but I’m happy to see the rain.” After the adjustment, I thought about her statement and the connection it has to healing and understanding the perfection of the body. The body performs thousands of tasks – simultaneously, all while appearing to be doing nothing or without any indication of the complexity involved. Many people take their health and their body for granted, not knowing of the complexity or perfection of the body. However, the Law of Duality allows us to reach a place of gratitude for our body and the health we have. Think of the time when your nose has been plugged with mucous or your throat is sore from inflammation and irritation. During the process, you may forget what it was like to sleep with your mouth closed or to swallow without pain. Suddenly, one day, the mucous breaks or the inflammation subsides and you once again are in deep gratitude and awe of the perfection of the body, the nose and throat. This is one of the reasons I love the Northwest – we have seasons – just when we’ve had enough of the rain, we’re blessed with sun and vice-a-versa. Life is a process (just like the weather), we are going to experience some rainy days and sunny days, getting adjusted keeps us in the sunny days longer but also allows the perfection of those all to necessary rainy days (improve the immune system, rest, detox, heal, etc.). So, I say, “Let it rain and embrace it, and when the sun comes out, get out and play!

Not sure why this would be a surprise to anyone.  Let’s see….  Radiate sensitive breast tissue to see if you can detect cancer (by cancer causing radiation!).

Study shows how radiation causes breast cancer.

I was thinking of taking my son to go see a movie and we could share a bag of three Quarter Pounders topped with 12 pats of butter!

The story in the LA Times also states:

“It found that a Regal medium popcorn — 20 cups — contains 1,200 calories, 60 grams of saturated fat, and 980 milligrams of sodium. That’s without the buttery topping that can be drizzled — or poured — on the popcorn, which adds another 200 calories and 3 grams of saturated fat per 1.5 tablespoons.”

Movie popcorn is still a horror – Los Angeles Times.

There is another way to check – Breast

radiation to find cancer.
